Following Passion

rockr_iconThe story of Oddly and K2 Sports goes back to “gnarshmallow”, our own developer Adam and his passion for skiing, and a trip to Whistler. The point being that when you follow your passions, you come in contact with others who are also passionate about that thing, and for Oddly that passion led to K2 Sports. K2 is a truly international company, and their top notch products are renowned with skiers all over the planet.

K2 and Oddly Studios

When K2 wanted to get the word out about their latest innovation in skiing technology – 5 Rocker profiles – they came to Oddly for clarity of communication, and passion in presentation. Rocker technology would be introduced to more than ninety percent of the company’s new line of skis and so communicating how the technology worked would be of utmost importance.

We got the design team rolling, employing skills in design, composition, visual effects, and 3D modelling to design a narrative that would be as clean as a fresh sheet of snow. At the same time, all the excitement of the brand would be emphasized through crisp animation, vibrant use of color, and sound.

In all, six animated pieces were done, including the intro. The promotions were designed to be rolled out first to internal teams at conferences, then released online to consumers in general and as an assist to sales teams. To that end we created various versions from DVD quality to web optimized.

Prep Work

As part of our work with K2, we did quite lot of research and preparation, including a trip to the Canadian distributor where we met some great people. They were good enough to loan us a full line of skis for modelling purposes and technical accuracy. As the photos show, they get quite busy at certain times of the year. Storyboards, and rocking out are all part of it.
